Life with The Turtlesinger and The Turtletoter

December 15, 2022

Turtle Christmas Ornaments and Cards

No one from here in Cape May County can see the sign Santa is holding without thinking of all the turtle crossing signs, especially like the ones near our house on Stone Harbor Boulevard, reminding drivers of our local diamondback terrapins crossing the roads during nesting season.

Last year we had a little turtle-themed Christmas tree—but with our 7-month old, extremely playful kitten Willie’s first Christmas this year, all ornaments are displayed with cat safety measures in mind (which includes no tree this year lol)!

We’ll also be sharing with you one of nature’s ornaments as well as some of our past turtle Christmas cards.

So, to celebrate the holiday season in a mostly turtle way, just click the “read more” button below!

Tiny Turtle Treasures at Tuckahoe

We’re back to blogging at least for a bit as our current outdoor events are temporarily on hold while Charlie The Turtletoter finds out what needs to be done for his probable future back surgery.

So, we’ll be playing a game of catch up as we start by showing you wonderful 2022 wild turtles we didn’t get a chance to until now…like baby mud turtles!

This tiny, quarter-sized mud turtle is just one of many we found this year on April 8th on the roads at the Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area.

So, to see a little video of this mud turtle, and to see many miniature as well as another marvelous mud turtle, just click the “read more” button below!

Loony

We went loony for loons in winter plumage seen from the North Wildwood Wall in mid-March! This and all of the following photos and video were taken on March 14th.

We see cormorants, relatives of the loons, behind our house on Stone Harbor Boulevard all the time—but rarely loons there.

For more looks at loons as well as another kind of coastal sea duck, just click the “read more” button below.

Turtle Butterfly

Imagine our surprise when, after we photographed this delightful butterfly at the Eldora Nature Preserve on March 11th, we discovered it has a turtle connection: it’s a Compton Tortoiseshell butterfly (there are no coincidences)!

Talk about camouflage! And turtles also have a way of blending well with their surroundings.

You can just see some of the beautiful orange colors on this butterfly that are evident--along with the tortoiseshell pattern--when the wings are fully opened.

For some turtles we also saw that day, as well as other butterfly encounters to share, just click the “read more” button below.

A Plunging of Gannets

Wait for the bird “tornado” I mention in this video—I was looking one way and Charlie was filming another at the start!

Our last blog included the winter snow geese migration at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. This blog features another large, white bird migration closer to home: a huge gathering of gannets at Townsend’s Inlet between Sea Isle City and Avalon, New Jersey.

We were in awe of so many things: the sheer size (largest seabirds in the North Atlantic) and number of these seabirds, what must have been the huge school of fish below which prompted their feeding, and their aerodynamics!

Keep in mind that none of the white spots on the water are waves: they are all gannets!

For an even better and more hypnotic gannet airshow, just click the “read more” button below.

Don’t be fooled by the beauty and graceful lines of this elegant swan we saw at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge back in mid-March: in the next video, you’re about to get mooned!

This blog will feature some of the wonders we saw at Forsythe, including some masses of waterfowl later in the blog.

Boulevard Blog

Watch Spike on one of his feeding days (it’s a talkie, so turn your volume up). And if you see a reflection in the water, pay no attention to the lady who gets up and feeds her turtle first thing in the morning without even combing her hair yet!

We actually feed Spike every 5 days—more often in the summer when he's more active—and though that may not seem like a lot, we were advised that we could feed him even less if we wanted to. Also, compared to the wild snapping turtles we encounter, Spike looks overweight, so he’s definitely being fed enough.

Today’s Blog will also feature more of Spike as well as Rocky and several other different marsh denizens we wanted to share with you that we’ve seen in our back yard.

To watch another video of Spike later in the day, just click the “read more” button below.

Cox Hall Creep

We took this footage Monday (talking while filming so turn up your volume) and since I recently read the term "a creep of turtles" it seemed appropriate to use that term for the place at which we saw them: Cox Hall Creek Wildlife Management Area in Villas, New Jersey!

We saw painted and red-bellied turtles in nearly every body of water at this WMA that day...and it's not even really warm yet, so our turtle sighting opportunities are just going to get better and better as it gets warmer.

Along with showing you these wild local turtles, this is our opportunity to let you know you can enjoy 12 fabulous turtle photographs from our 2023 Turtlesinger calendar! All you have to do is click "Turtlesinger Calendar" at the top of this page and after you get there, scroll way to the bottom to see all 12 pictures.

First Turtlesinger Turtle Foray Outdoors!

You may remember the unseasonably warm day we had here in Cape May County on March 7th. Well, we could not resist taking the Turtlesinger turtles inland (it was too cool at our house closer to the coast) to enjoy their first fresh air and sunshine of 2022 that day!

All of our 4 turtles (and tortoises) had a great time, and Spike, our 16-year-old snapping turtle (seen here) was the first to have a turn.

The Cusp of Spring

We thought we’d say goodbye to winter by sharing the best out of the 100+ photos we took the last few months walking the 24 miles of trails in Belleplain State Forest.

One of the things we never got tired of looking up at: so many amazingly tall trees at Belleplain!

Different Day, Different Trail, Different Lake: Same Forest!

Today we’ll take you with us on a completely different part of Belleplain with a different lake trail.

This trail is the East Creek Trail and it winds partially around or near the East Creek Pond.

We have a goal in mind—as always, while waiting for warmer weather when we can be on the lookout for wild turtles—to explore all of Belleplain State Forest’s trails! HOWEVER, just this past Saturday when the temperature was 62 degrees, we DID see 2 WILD TURTLES SUNNING THEMSELVES IN SEAVILLE: IN FEBRUARY!!! And there was still ice near the edge of the pond!

Creatures of Winter

Although we’re constantly on the lookout for wild turtles during the warmer months, we also keep an eye out for non-reptilian creatures this time of year. You never know what kind of animals you’ll see on a winter walk in Cape May County, but we thought we’d share a few of our sightings with you.

Bart Attempts to Eat 12 Grapes to 12 New Year Chimes for Good Luck!

Happy New Year and welcome to our first ever New Year blog!

We looked up new traditions to celebrate this New Year and discovered a Spanish tradition where they pop a grape into their mouths and eat one for each stroke of midnight.

We weren’t sure WE could do it, but were pretty sure BART, our red-footed tortoise, could, since he loves grapes and like all reptiles attempts to swallow his food whole!

So, to watch video footage of Big Black Bart (who by the way turns 35 years old this year) and to see if he can down 12 grapes one at a time to each stroke of London’s Big Ben at midnight, and to read about some other New Year traditions, just click the “read more” button below.

Patriot Day: Remembering 9/11

Pictured here, Rocky helps us remember Patriot Day and 9/11 today. I lived in and around New York City in Queens, Hoboken, and Brooklyn for most of the 80’s. There, I got my training in reptiles at the Big Bronx Zoo reptile house, worked part-time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, sang off-off Broadway opera, worked in the Wall Street district, commuting through the former World Trade Center daily, and met and married my first husband, Dick (now deceased), who was a journalism professor at NYU.

New York City was a big part of my life, and every year on 9/11 I pause and feel deeply affected by the tragedy of the bombing as I remember those who lost their lives that day.

I belong to a group called CMCS: the Cape May County Songwriters. CMCS gives me a chance to write and perform non-turtle songs, as well as providing an inspiration for new turtle songs, too. We haven’t had our monthly meetings since covid, but we’ve met for many years. Our practice has become to do a monthly assignment, where a member picks a phrase and then everyone writes a song including that phrase. On the 9/11 anniversary in 2018, I wrote a song about my memories of 9/11 including the assignment, “dressed in black” (lyrics below):

Dressed in Black – A Song For 9/11 – (September assignment: Dressed in black) (9/11/18, © Karen Buckley)

Dressed in black When the towers fell

They never came back They never came back

Dressed in gray That terrible day

When the ash cloud Never went away

Dressed in white As the ash cloud grows

And the terror rose, The terror rose,

And dressed blues For the lives they would lose

We’ll never forget The attack, the attack

Dressed in red For the fire that spread

For the cries, for the screams When the lines went dead

Dressed to kill For that was their will

These scenes forever in our minds to fill

Dressed in yellow For every fellow

Who swallowed his fear To save someone near

Dressed in pink Who knew what to think

When the planes went down All around

Dressed in a rainbow of women and men

Who would never see their Loved ones again

Dressed in brown It changed each town

It changed our nation As the shock went round

Where were you when planes no Longer flew,

when we All held our breaths And counted the deaths?

Everything stopped Look up in the sky

No plane goes by, No planes go by

Wait, who’s next Hold on to your loved ones

Are we safe? The fear is racing

I used one of the Towers daily

Now reduced To dust and bones

Dressed in gray People on their way

Never knowing their lives would End that day

All dressed up In a suit and a tie

When they realized they were Going to die……

Dressed in green It’s a different scene

As one proud tower Rises serene

Dressed in black We mourn for the lack

Of the ones who never came back From the attack
