June 3, 2020

Recently we had another Turtlesinger milestone as 2 more events had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 and our total estimated losses to date due to the pandemic passed the $7,000 mark. Unfortunately, we received no financial assistance from the government’s PPP’s (Payroll Protection Plans), so any donation in any form you may wish to make is greatly appreciated. If you cannot donate: we hope you will continue to enjoy our Blog, and thank you as always for reading! Many thanks to Garden State General Construction (Charlie, The Turtletoter, is also the Office Manager), where we have seen so many beautiful box turtles, including the one pictured 3 ways on the left. Scroll down to see VIDEO of another box turtle on the move while you listen to the Turtlesinger song, Box Turtles on the Move (lyrics below)…

Box Turtles on the Move!

Box turtles are indeed on the move in Cape May County, and we’re so sorry to report we’ve already seen a handful of box turtles killed on our roads. ☹ On the left, handsome box turtle Harry moves about outside. Box Turtles on the Move is a slow and rather serious march I wrote about the unhurried way box turtles tend to move and the tragic way they get killed crossing the roads (the complete lyrics are listed below). Hopefully, this song helps remind people why they are crossing and to watch out for these turtles, some of the longest-living vertebrates in North America! Box turtles can live to be over 100 years old (if they don't get killed crossing the roads, that is)!

Another question is: How do you tell a girl box turtle from a boy box turtle? Just click the Feedback button on the right to answer! Thanks again for reading.

I FOUND A TURTLE -- HE SAW A TURTLE

THE TRUCK DRIVER FOUND ONE, TOO

AND SHE SAW ONE WHEN GOING TO THE GROCERY STORE:

WHERE ARE THEY GOING TO?

TURTLES ARE TAKING THEIR ANCIENT PATHS,

SOMETIMES HAVING TO CROSS THE ROADS --

TAKING A RISKY PILGRIMAGE,

EVEN THOUGH DANGER FORBODES…

(REFRAIN) BOX TURTLES ON THE MOVE -- ALL OVER THE LAND

BOX TURTLES ON THE MOVE! CAN WE LEND THEM A HAND?

MAKING THEIR DELIBERATE, STEADY WAY—

WILL YOU ALSO SEE ONE TODAY?

BOX TURTLES ON THE MOVE: TURTLES ON THEIR WAY…

PEOPLE ALSO MIGRATE LIKE TURTLES DO,

AND PEOPLE) TRAVEL ON A HOLIDAY

AND JUST LIKE THE PEOPLE, TURTLES NEED TO MOVE:

THE TURTLES CANNOT STAY...

THE TIME HAS COME FOR THE BOX TURTLES,

NOW THEY MUST CROSS THE ROAD, GOING TO MATE OR HIBERNATE:

DOING WHAT NATURE FORETOLD! (REFRAIN)

BOX TURTLES SEARCHING, SEARCHING FOR FOOD,

THEY NEED TO BE A CERTAIN WEIGHT

BEFORE THEY CAN DIG INTO THE DIRT AND LEAVES,

BEFORE THEY CAN HIBERNATE

YOU MAY SAY WHY DON’T THEY STAY IN THE WOODS,

WHY DO THEY RISK GETTING HIT BY A CAR?

BUT THEY MAY SAY, “WHY DID YOU PUT THE ROADS

RIGHT WHERE THE TURTLE HOMES ARE?

BOX TURTLES ON THE MOVE! ALL OVER THE LAND!

BOX TURTLES ON THE MOVE: CAN WE LEND THEM A HAND?

MAKING THEIR DELIBERATE, STEADY WAY—

WILL YOU ALSO SEE ONE TODAY?

BOX TURTLES ON THE MOVE: TURTLES ON THEIR WAY…

THEY’RE JUST BOX TURTLES ON THE MOVE: TURTLES ON THEIR WAY
