Not Just Hats

Here Rocky, Gracie and Big Black Bart are shown not in hats, but belts in honor of National Dress Up Your Pet Day.

Many people ask us if the belt Big Black Bart wears has constricted his shell. We’re glad they ask us this because it shows they care about turtles who have been shown to have a shell restriction problem due to plastic tie rings. In our case, it’s actually just the opposite: we thought of getting Bart a belt for his shell BECAUSE adult, male red-footed tortoises have a natural, hourglass waist and indentation in their shell: perfect for a belt! So, Bart had the natural indentation in his shell before we ever thought of getting him this costume so he could be the mascot for our motorcycle run for the turtles for 12 years.

You can also see Rocky and Gracie’s belts don’t fit nearly as well as Bart’s since they do not have a natural indentation in the middle of their shells. Their belts fall off a lot—which is fine with us. 😊

Here, the 3 turtles are enjoying some fresh air and reminding riders to please stop for turtles on the roads at the Roar to the Shore motorcycle rally in Wildwood, New Jersey.

Happy National Hat Day Tomorrow!

Bart wears this hat for National Hat Day tomorrow on January 15th.

It’s not that easy to find a hat small enough to fit Big Black Bart’s head!

This and the following hats were actually part of some decorations for easter eggs. This could easily be a Santa hat if it was red—but we’ll just pretend Bart is one of Santa’s elves wearing this hat!

Flamenco Hat?

Bart wore these hats with little concern and possibly a jaunty air!

This black hat, with its red hat band, goes perfectly with Big Black Bart’s black shell, arms and face.

It also sets off his beautiful Redfoot tortoise red leg markings!

Ooh La La?

This National Hat Day hat worn under his chin reminds me somehow of French fashion…

…or maybe of something from Dr. Seuss!

We’ve had many Dr. Seuss Turtlesinger Show celebrations focusing, of course on his famous book, Yertle The Turtle.

Two Hats in One

We couldn’t resist showing you Bart wearing 2 hats at once to celebrate National Hat Day tomorrow!

Our favorite hats are the caps we wear to keep the sun off our heads while looking for turtles and other wildlife or kayaking.

But I’ve been known to wear a few Easter and sun bonnets, and Charlie wore a striking hat at our wedding.

Berry Cute

We dressed up our pet turtle Gracie in this outfit made especially for her by the late, talented Melody Murphy of the Holy Spirit Lutheran Church prayer shawl group.

Gracie wore this outfit at the Annual Strawberry Festival in West Cape May, New Jersey.

Gracie loves to eat strawberries, too!

Pretty as a Princess

We dressed up our Gracie as a Princess!

This performance was part of a Turtlesinger Show for the Daycare Center children at Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House, New Jersey.

Gracie has dressed up as a Princess many times at Turtlesinger Shows for an original fairy tale entitled “The Unfriendly Fairy.”

We have often performed original fairy tales as part of Turtlesinger, Inc’s Live Turtle Little Puppet Theater.

Wearin’ O’ the Green

Rocky rocked a St. Paddy’s Day hat during a special appearance at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Villas, New Jersey.

This was originally a hat designed for a dog.

Rocky Santa

We wish we could have gotten a clear shot of Rocky with the whole hat showing, complete with the white ball on top: but we still couldn’t resist showing you Rocky in his Santa hat in honor of National Dress Up Your Pet Day today and National Hat Day tomorrow.

This hat is a perfect fit for Rocky’s shell.

Finally, to see Spike’s hat, SCROLL DOWN…

January 14, 2021

King of the Turtles

Spike proudly wears his crown, which seems only appropriate since common snapping turtles are the largest kind of turtle in New Jersey.

The alligator snapping turtle is also the largest turtle in North America.

This crown would look a lot smaller if it were placed on Spike’s shell today!

Thanks so much for reading and celebrating National Dress Up Your Pet Day today and National Hat Day tomorrow!
