We named her “Cinco”

Cinco was named for the 5 tries it took before she laid her eggs on our sand pile. Many terrapins start digging their nests on our sand pile right away, and others take a few more tries putting them on our sand pile.

I happened to spot Cinco crossing the road heading right for our nesting site and I frantically called Charlie who was weed-whacking there at the time, and luckily he felt his cell phone buzz and saved her from oncoming traffic! There were many turtles out and about that day.

Cinco laid 13 eggs on June 13!

Cinco’s Hatchlings

Cinco’s 13 eggs hatched on September 13th. Just listen...

You will see the nest hole from which the hatchlings emerged is very visible. In some nests, no nest hole is visible at all! And not to worry about the hatchling that fell: it didn't fall far, and it fell on nice soft sand.

The 10th Day of December

On the 10th day of December, we found an ornament of a sea turtle wearing a Santa hat with a roasted turkey on it’s back!

Speaking of turtles and turkeys, to see live turtles dressed as turkeys, including Turtlesinger tortoise Big Black Bart, as well as some live domestic and wild turkeys, check out our November 26, 2020 blog!

We named her “Summer”

Summer was named for laying her eggs on the first full day of summer. Our neighbor Andrea helped once again--she knocked on our door with Summer and said she had crossed from the north right to our property. Summer started nesting right away. Hot weather made the sand look quite dry as she nested and she was also pretty quick to finish nesting.

We won’t be able to show you Summer’s hatchlings, because they haven’t hatched—again, either infertile or waiting for Spring.

But we'd like to show you some special turtle nest camera footage instead! To see it, just SCROLL DOWN…

Instead of Summer's Hatchlings...

We thought we’d show you Nova’s (our 8th turtle in the previous blog) complete nesting process caught on our turtle nest cameras (we speeded up the actual nesting process)…enjoy!

The strap you see flapping in the wind is part of our winch system "turtle elevator" that helps us lift our 33-pound tortoise up and down to his summer outdoor pen.

The 11th Day of December

On the 11th day of December, we found an ornament with a sea turtle wearing a Santa hat!

Speaking of turtles and Santa hats, you can see a picture of Turtlesinger 3-toed box turtle Rocky wearing a Santa hat, Turtlesinger Tortoise Big Black Bart wearing an elf hat, and more turtles wearing different hats and costumes in our January 14, 2021 Blog!

We named her “Bree”

"Bree" was named for a girl who is resolute: because she went right for our sand pile and started flinging sand right away on June 23rd. Traffic stopped to help this lucky girl--it takes a village--who Charlie saw from our upstairs porthole window while I saw another at the same time heading south along our next-door neighbor’s property (that will be the next turtle you’ll be reading about)!

She would lay 10 eggs.

Bree's Hatchlings

Turn up the volume to hear about these hatchlings! We found a hole in this nest on September 11th but no turtles until we dug a little and found them just beneath the surface. It had been in the upper 80’s that day and maybe they had come out earlier then retreated to cooler temperatures in their nest.

Our friends who were visiting at the time remarked that we had protected and released 10 turtles from nest 11 on September 11!

Thanks for celebrating Advent and the 9th, 10th and 11th days of December with our sea turtle advent calendar AND our celebration of the turtles that were laid and hatched in our yard! We’ll be sharing more days of December and this past terrapin season with you…thanks for reading!
