Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Mom! I told my mom about a tiny bumblebee-sized turtle we found at the nearby Tuckahoe Wildlife Management area recently, so I’ll post it today for her. We helped 2 of these tiny mud turtles cross the road! So, keep your eyes peeled there and you can help them, too. On the few warm days we’ve had this spring, we’ve gone to this area to look for turtles: and we always find some!

Now for some bad news and good news...

Yikes

Pictured left is a wild, common snapping turtle we helped across the Garden State Parkway. We chose this picture because he looks just as aghast as we do on this swallow-hard day. I updated our Turtlesinger gig guide and it was sobering to take 25 cancelled events off this year’s schedule of upcoming events. That leaves 7 events left, all of which are in question. What can I say except: yikes! We’ll be posting our upcoming events schedule here on our new website soon. Especially now during Covid-19, all events are subject to change without notice. On the bright side, we thank our friend Kathleen, who made a recent PayPal contribution to Turtlesinger, Inc.! Many thanks, Kathleen!! Now, about Spike...

Spike!

Today is also Spike’s feeding day! Spike gets fed every 5 days, and that may not sound like enough, but rest assured that Spike is a very well-fed (a kind way of saying he’s fat) snapping turtle. One way to spot a well-fed turtle is the girth of the tail, and the wild snapping turtles we find NEVER have tails as thick as Spike’s—their tails are skinny in comparison. So we’re definitely NOT underfeeding Spike. This morning he had some salmon chunks—his favorite!—courtesy of my brother Hal’s contribution to Spike’s food supply: BIG thanks to Hal from Spike and from Turtlesinger, Inc.! To watch Spike eat today’s salmon, click on the video to the left, where you can also hear my Spike song (lyrics below) for the first half of the video.

It’s Spike, he’s Spike, his head and neck are covered with little spikes!

His shell was only an inch long and so was his tail!

He’s Spike, he’s Spike, the most handsome Florida snapping turtle:

and he never fights since he was only 3 weeks old!

Our Spike, our Spike, we’re having a wondrous life I really like

with Charlie, Rocky and Gracie, and Big Black Bart!

Oh Spike, our Spike, for your first meal you ate couscous-sized pellets,

all inside a dixie cup...and technically you could grow to weigh eighty pounds!!!

Our Spike, yes our Spike has beautiful, soulful eyes...

With Spike, with Spike: we’ll teach people a snapping turtle’s one you can like!

Oh Spike my Spike, It’s like God dropped you right in my lap

And oh, I couldn’t say no, so here we go:

And within one hour you were in your first Turtlesinger Show!

Our Spike, oh Spike, what a happy, happy, happy birthday you were to me…

I’m enchanted by our Spike, It’s so much more than just “like”

I’m in love…with our snapping turtle, Spike!
