We named her “Joan”

"Joan" was named for Joan of Arc because she led another terrapin behind her onto our property (who got scared and left) and then met another terrapin and that terrapin also followed her, so she was definitely a brave leader. I watched her approach and meet the other terrapin and when it followed Joan, I decided to put both on our nesting pile. Joan immediately started nesting by a nearby exclosure while the other chose a very grassy and low nesting spot not far away. Brave Joan finished laying her 8 eggs but her follower perhaps got scared and did not.

Joan’s Hatchlings

Our 19th terrapin to lay eggs was also the 19th nest to hatch—you may have noticed that most of our nests do not hatch in order of laying! Charlie found 4 hatchlings. After opening the top, I spotted a 5th hatchling climbing the wall. Then later, Charlie found two more hatchlings! The rain the night before after many days without rain might have brought these hatchlings out. They had very little yolk sacs and no egg teeth visible which may account for how quickly they entered the water--MUCH faster than usual when we released them! At least 3 of the hatchlings also (1 immediately and 2 more later) swam out toward the middle of the canal vs. hiding in the grasses near the turtle ramp or near the turtle ramp.

The 20th Day of December

On the 20th day of December, our sea turtle ornament featured a wave and he carried a surfboard on his back!

Surfing and turtles always remind me of Hawaii, where surfers rule and sea turtles are considered sacred! We saw surfers on the North Shore in Oahu but no sea turtles who routinely sun themselves there because the water and waves were just too rough that day.

We named her “Blaze”

"Blaze" was the first of 2 turtles to lay in our sand pile on June 28th. Blaze was brought to us by our next-door neighbor Andrea. Blaze was named for how fast she finished the entire nesting process: in just 13 minutes--half the usual nesting time!!! It was hot out and she nested in the full sun, too. Blaze also nested not far above the flood/new moon tide the night before: yikes! Here you can watch her doing the typical terrapin "jig" while covering and camouflaging her nest. Like our 19th nester, Joan, Blaze would lay 8 eggs.

Blaze’s Hatchlings

Charlie discovered her hatchlings at the exact same time I discovered hatchlings in another nest after a night of rain. We were delighted because we're quite sure Blaze's nest was seriously flooded and maybe more than a few times! We found the last 2 of Blaze’s 8 hatchlings when we excavated the nest early before a weekend storm.

The 21st Day of December

On the 21st day of December, we found an ornament with a sea turtle whose shell was covered with Christmas lights!

Christmas lights make me think of the sea turtle lights we used to decorate the Turtlesinger trailer for nighttime parades. The large inflatable turtle we also use in parades is now standing in our front yard with green lights for Christmas all over his head and shell, too!

We named her “Florence”

"Florence" was our 2nd terrapin to lay in our sand pile on June 28th. She was named for a kind nurse who helped her cross right in front of our sand pile from the north. Traffic was very heavy as the July 4th week traffic started that day. This was her 2nd nesting spot the first was very close to the road in the grass, this was under the pine tree not far from the first try, and finally she laid in the sand on our pile.

Florence would lay 9 eggs.

Florence’s Hatchlings

Turn up your volume to hear about the discovery of Florence's hatchlings! This made 63 hatchlings since our guests arrived on September 6th! We released them with 14 others just after high tide and found Florence’s other hatchling 3 days later.

Thanks for celebrating Advent and the 19th, 20th and 21st days of December with our sea turtle advent calendar AND our celebration of the turtles that were laid and hatched in our yard! We couldn’t quite catch up in time with our Advent calendar, but we’ll catch up with the remaining ornaments for the days of December and this past terrapin season with you…thanks for reading!
