“West is Best!”

Westy is part of a local contingent of wild box turtles who frequent our friend Debbie’s back yard every year.

We love seeing wild male box turtles—identifiable by their red eyes!

He’s Got the Hots for Her!

Not only did we encounter a female box turtle in Debbie’s yard, but Rocky did, too: and although Rocky is a male 3-toed box turtle and this is a female eastern box turtle (note the brown eyes): Rocky was enthralled and chased her around the yard!

Back to Westy: to watch Westy eat a mushroom, SCROLL DOWN…

He Makes that Mushroom Look Delicious!

We took this video one year on my birthday in July, and Westy was very patient letting us film him eating. Here Westy prefers to devour a fresh mushroom, even though we offered him some fresh peach slices. It took him 10 deliberate minutes to eat the mushroom, but we sped up the video 4 times faster so you can watch him eat it in 2 minutes! Debbie is very kind to offer us mushrooms from her yard for our Big Black Bart, who loves to devour them, too! Debbie is also very kind to give us wild trumpet flowers, which Bart eats with equal abandon. We thank Debbie for all her kindnesses to our Turtlesinger turtles as well as to her wild herd of box turtles.

Unlike Westy the eastern box turtle, our 3-toed box turtle Rocky seems to like mushrooms not at all! This is like Turtletoter Charlie, who loves mushrooms, and I, The Turtlesinger: like them not at all.

Thanks as always for reading!
