We named her “Runa”

Runa's nest is one of the many shown here. "Runa" was named for a girl having to do with secrets, because she came up the ramp and nested without our even knowing about it! Someone honked their horn driving by, prompting us to run to the windows like we always do during nesting season to see if a terrapin is crossing the road. I saw Runa heading toward our bulkhead--but I knew she had already laid her eggs because the back of her shell was almost completely covered by sand, something that can happen during the nesting process. Sure enough, our web cams showed her coming up our ramp earlier, and it was great to see her go through the complete nesting process so unhurried and serenely and never having to cross the road. She was also named Runa because there is a Runa who is a dedicated reader of our YouTube posts!

Runa’s Hatchlings

Turn up your volume to hear about Runa's first 10 hatchlings videoed by flashlight! Our 22nd terrapin to lay eggs was also the 7th nest to hatch! Charlie went out on a routine nightly check of the nests at 9:00 p.m. and counted 9 hatchlings "waiting for the bus" on September 2nd. A few minutes later it turned out to be a total of 10 turtles, and a few days later we found one more hatchling! So, Runa laid 11 eggs.

The 23rd Day of December

On the 23rd day of December, our sea turtle ornament featured a turtle enjoying a tropical drink from a coconut shell! To see our bobblehead turtle made from a coconut shell, see our previous January 7, 2021 bobblehead blog!

Speaking of turtles and drinks, and especially the hatchling diamondback terrapins we find, we always feel privileged to give them their first drinks of water after they emerge from the nests!

We named her “Nellie”

"Nellie" was named for being a Nervous Nellie--she finally got up the nerve to head up our driveway and she initially freaked out when I put her on our sand pile. It took maybe 6 tries but Nellie finally nested: whew! Persistence was the word of the day for Nellie! She headed back to the original spot where she entered our property to exit it. Then she swam under our dock toward the east before heading out to deeper water in our canal. So many loud jet skis and other boat traffic that day made us hope they didn't hit or hurt Nellie and our nesting turtles, even making us wonder: do they know the terrapins are out and about and nesting?

Nellie’s Hatchlings

Turn up your volume to hear about Nellie's hatchlings! Our 23rd terrapin to lay eggs produced our 10th nest to hatch!

Charlie looked over the nests during another routine evening check and discovered 7 hatchlings after the rain, all covered with wet sand. We would discover one more hatchling a few days later, for a total of 8 hatchlings produced by Nellie!

The 24th Day of December

On the 24th day of December, we found an ornament with a sea turtle wearing a Santa hat and straddling presents! What an appropriate ornament for Christmas Eve!

Because of the many turtle presents we have received over the years under our tree, our house is FULL of not only living but ornamental turtles, as well as photos of turtles on our walls. It is truly a turtle house! At one time, part of our turtle collection was on display at the Lower Township Public Library. And speaking of turtles and presents, at Christmas time we love to wrap Turtlesinger Calendar orders in turtle Christmas wrapping paper!

We named her “Cockles”

"Cockles" was named for a shell because she laid her eggs right at the end of our shell driveway next to our bulkhead. If we had caught her in time as she started nesting, we would have moved her to our sand pile, but by the time we spotted her, she looked like she was actually laying her eggs. Most of our lowest nests on the sand pile have produced hatchlings so we'll hope for the best. We fear for Cockles’ nest due to its location and repeated episodes of being completely underwater. Our driveway nest in shells last year appeared to produce hatchlings (because we found empty eggshells) but that nest was laid in a much higher location toward the road.

Therefore, we have no hatchlings to show you for Cockles. But, although we've completed our advent calendar, our nesting terrapins did not stop at 24! In fact, 29 terrapins nested in our yard this year—a record number for us! We’ll be showing the rest of them to you in the next and final blog for 2025.

Thanks for completing Advent and the 22nd, 23rd and 24th days of December with our sea turtle advent calendar AND celebrating the turtles that laid and were hatched in our yard! Watch for the completion of our celebration of 2025 nesting turtles on the final day of the year…thanks for reading!
