The First Day of December

On the first day of December, we found this sea turtle ornament with a little witch’s hat and a pumpkin shell! It must be a farewell to November/Halloween turtle!

Our Turtlesinger turtles, Rocky and Gracie, have both worn pumpkin costumes on their shells (and witch and wizard hats on their shells, too) at Halloween.

We named her “Fortune”

Fortune was extremely fortunate: Charlie the Turtletoter stopped traffic after he saw Fortune crossing the road right in front of our driveway!

Here you can see her laying 3 of her eggs! She laid 7 eggs on June 6, 2025.

Fortune’s Hatchling

Fortune’s 7 eggs started hatching on August 23rd, the day of a new moon.

Her hatchlings continued to be fortunate because their nest had been flooded by Hurricane Erin offshore combined with the new moon tide: but they survived the flooding, anyway: whew! These tiny turtles were very hard for us to see as they were all covered in sand after the flooding and all the rain…but they were perfect!

The Second Day of December

On the second day of December, we found an ice hockey-playing sea turtle ornament wearing a Santa hat!

Speaking of turtles and sports, we always say the only turtle you have to fear is the University of Maryland Terrapins and their terrapin mascot (their motto is “Fear The Turtle”)!

We named her “Sheryl Crow”

"Sheryl (Crow)" got her name because two crows showed up waiting to eat her eggs or to dig them up!

Sheryl was already very still and in the process of laying her eggs by the time we discovered her. Sheryl laid 10 eggs on June 7, 2025.

Sheryl’s Hatchling

Sheryl’s hatchling can be seen here checking out its new home in the salt marsh! Sheryl’s 10 eggs started hatching on September 6th.

Her hatchlings were also fortunate because their nest had also been flooded by Hurricane Erin offshore combined with the new moon tide: but they survived the flooding, anyway!

Thanks for celebrating Advent and the first 2 days of December with our sea turtle advent calendar AND our celebration of the turtles that were laid and hatched in our yard! We’ll be sharing more days of December and this past terrapin season with you…thanks for reading!
