Painted Red

We’ve been observing these wild painted turtles for the last few months in Cape May Court House, New Jersey.

These turtles look like they have beautiful red markings painted on parts of their necks, legs and shell.

Painted turtles are known for their colder weather hardiness, and are some of the first turtles to emerge from winter hibernation.

The Eyes Have It

Like many water turtles, painted turtle eyes blend in with the markings on their face.

These are delightful, small turtles, with the males growing much smaller than the females. They are sometimes confused with red-bellied turtles, but red-bellied turtles grow much larger and have different markings.

Painted turtles also do not have red bellies! Painted turtles are the most common basking turtle in New Jersey.

Turtles & Lily Pads & Fish: Oh My!

Seeing these little turtles is always a special treat, and their natural curiosity as well as evident contentment always move me more toward thoughts of kindness, speaking of National Kindness Week.

The number of painted turtles we still see being active here is dwindling as winter approaches. In October we counted 30 painted turtles and now are seeing less than a dozen. Studies have shown ice in the veins of hibernating painted turtles!

So, we can still see wild turtles in Cape May County in November! For one more thing about tomorrow’s special day, SCROLL DOWN…

6 Degrees of Separation
and Carl Sagan Day

Happy Carl Sagan Day tomorrow!

And, in keeping with our painted turtle theme as well as our connection to Carl Sagan, here’s a painted turtle at my little brother’s pond in upstate New York.

Don’t get me started on 6 degrees of separation stories! We once had a party where people wore name tags but had to put on the name tag someone famous they were connected to through 6 degrees of separation. At that party, we had everyone from Barbra Streisand, Paul Newman, General Pershing, the Tidy Bowl Man, to Tab Hunter there! And off the top of my head, I can come up with many—even as recently as a few weeks ago when we became connected by 6 degrees of separation to the very famous sea turtle icon Archie Carr!

So, we love 6 degrees of separation stories, and to read how we’re connected to Carl Sagan (by degrees) in a turtle way, SCROLL DOWN…

Turtle Sandbox

Here we go with the 6 degrees of separation turtle way we’re connected to Carl Sagan:

1. Carl Sagan was for a time a professor of astronomy, as well as director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies, at Cornell University.

2. My grandfather also attended Cornell University, and I was born about half an hour away in Cortland, New York.

3. My parents were lifelong friends with a couple who lived in our hometown of Groton, New York.

4. The wife of that couple was the nanny for Carl Sagan’s children.

5. One day that nanny asked my little brother, with whom they used to play ping pong, if he would like the turtle sandbox for his children that Carl’s kids had grown out of.

6. So: my little brother became the owner of Carl Sagan’s children’s turtle sandbox!

And we, of course pictured here, have a turtle sandbox just like it, which has been used numerous times for Turtlesinger shows and even parades.

We hope you’ve enjoyed reading how we’re connected to Carl Sagan in a turtle way, and that you have a wonderful Carl Sagan Day tomorrow! Take some time to look at the stars—and thanks as always for reading.
