We named her “Lynn”

"Lynn" was named for neighbor Lynn who called to tell us someone had helped a turtle cross the road to our property near our trees. It took a while, but we finally saw her nesting under the bush in the top middle of our pile. Boy was it hot (88 degrees at 9:40 a.m.--no wonder she elected to lay her eggs in the shade)! Lynn was the third terrapin to nest in our sand pile on June 24th.

Lynn produced 8 eggs.

Lynn’s Hatchlings

The first 6 of Lynn’s hatchlings emerged on quite a windy day as you will hear when you turn up the volume! But you’ll hear at least some of the narrative, including some about one of her hatchlings climbing right to the top of the exclosure: just one reason we place a lid on top of the exclosure! Did you know that turtles are good climbers? If not, now you know! Later in the video the 6 hatchlings are just some of the many tiny terrapins we had to release that day. Multiple nests can hatch in a single day!

The 16th Day of December

On the 16th day of December, we found an ornament of a sea turtle wearing a green and red scarf!

Festive holiday clothing and turtles reminds me of the matching sea turtle shirts Charlie and I wear at Christmas. A white sea turtle forms a decorated Christmas tree shape topped with a star! We have also featured our Turtlesinger Turtles Rocky, Gracie and Big Black Bart on the front of many Christmas cards over the years, wearing everything from angel haloes to reindeer antlers to festive Christmas hats to mittens!

We named her “Andie”

"Andie" was named for our neighbor Andy who picked her up when traffic stopped for her. She also started nesting right away—it was just too hot to be fussy and take more time like other terrapins had done on cooler days. It was 89 degrees at 9:50 a.m., and Andie was the 4th terrapin to lay on our sand pile on June 24th!

In October we would eventually find 8 hatchlings in Andie’s nest!

Andie’s Hatchlings

Turn up your volume to hear Charlie tell you about these cuties!

It was only 55 degrees at 10:50 a.m. on October 17th when he found them. We waited all day for others to emerge, but none did even when the nest was in sunlight and it got 7 degrees warmer.

The 17th Day of December

On the 17th day of December, our ornament was a sea turtle wearing a red scarf and carrying a decorated Christmas tree on its back!

This reminds me of our own turtle Christmas tree complete with turtle ornaments. I have also found that turtle keychains and even turtle earrings make great tree ornaments!

We named her “Madeline”

"Madeline" was named for a girl's name meaning "high" because she chose a high spot to lay her eggs on June 25th. She started nesting in our clamshell driveway, but as soon as she started sniffing and digging I put her on our sand pile. She initially freaked out trying to get THROUGH some of the other exclosures, but after she got through/between them she kicked up sand in the process, which may have helped kickstart her nesting. Turtle nesting often begins with sniffing and kicking up sand. She exited down our turtle ramp. Not all our terrapins come up our turtle ramp, but many exit down it. Maybe they will remember exiting there and will choose to enter our property that way next time: we hope so, because then they do not have to cross the road!

Madeline's Hatchlings

Turn up the volume to hear about Madeline's first 8 hatchlings emerging on September 6th! Then you'll see a bunch of hatchlings ready for release including all 9 of Madeline's hatchlings. Our cat Wally even makes an appearance wondering what's going on!

Thanks for celebrating Advent and the 15th, 16th and 17th days of December with our sea turtle advent calendar AND our celebration of the turtles that were laid and hatched in our yard! We’ll be sharing more days of December and this past terrapin season with you…thanks for reading!
