A Panoramic View

Seeing this Christmas tree here by the Avalon boardwalk took us completely by surprise! It was late afternoon and the lights were even on.

Then the next morning, this and a few other beach Christmas trees were featured on the local TV news. Apparently the introduction of beach Christmas trees began last year during the pandemic, and people are encouraged to leave shells and/or ornaments

on the tree.

We knew there had to be a turtle on the tree, and we were right! To see this beach tree’s turtle ornament, SCROLL DOWN…

Beach Tree Turtle Ornament

This ornament had a message on the underside (or plastron) but we didn’t read it, not knowing if it was personal. We didn’t know until the newscast the next morning that these trees are for everyone.

Apparently some of these beach trees survive through the seasons to also be decorated for Valentines and even Saint Patrick’s Day! Beach trees like this one can also be found in Ocean City and Sea Isle City.

Lighthouse Tree

This beautifully lit (again, late afternoon) Christmas scene is just steps off the North Wildwood Wall at the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse.

Victorian Lighthouse

This lighthouse looks much as it did on a postcard circa 1854 shown on a sign nearby.

The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse was designed by Paul J. Pelz, architect of the U.S. Library of Congress.

It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Along with this North Wildwood lighthouse, we can also see the 156-foot Wildwood ferris wheel (best through our scope) all lit up for Christmas with changing scenes of a snowflake, wreath, Santa, Christmas tree, Christmas stocking, Rudolph, and a snowman!

Speaking of bright lights, we also saw numerous beautiful Geminid meteors last week.

Nature’s Christmas Ornament

Just as we were leaving the North Wildwood Wall that December day, I noticed one of nature’s Christmas ornaments right by the path.

Those of you who regularly read our blog know how much we admire praying mantises.

This is an ootheca, or praying mantis egg case, ready to hatch in the spring!

The mother mantis was so smart to lay it under a southeast branch, so it will be sheltered from those strong winter nor’easter winds.

Turtle in December

Imagine our surprise to find a very hardy wild Cape May County painted turtle still sunning itself: in December!

And don’t ask us what made the big ripple in the pond (another turtle? Or fish?) because we’re just not sure…

Anyway, we did not expect to still see a wild turtle in December, but were delighted nonetheless.

Magnetic Turtle Tree

Finding ourselves with more time to decorate for Christmas this year, we brought up the metal stand we’ve used in Turtlesinger shows, especially preschools, for our giant Yertle the Turtle Puzzle pieces.

Or, we’ve also used the stand as seen here: for kids to come up one at a time to decorate a turtle Christmas tree.

So many of these magnets have special memories of places where we’ve seen real, live turtles.

Magnets in Motion to Music!

Decorating this metal tree for Christmas was so much fun! And while you look at the turtle magnet ornaments, we hope you enjoy listening to Charlie’s and my combined What Child is This / Galapagos Christmas duet, which we have featured at many Christmas Turtlesinger Shows in New Jersey, including Camp Cape May, the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Chapter 44 Christmas Party in Del Haven, and Ocean City First Night Celebrations.

My Galapagos song is partially about the famous Lonesome George Galapagos tortoise we saw there (now deceased). To look for tortoise magnets on our metal screen, look for turtles with high-domed shells that don’t have flippers. Galapagos has been featured at hundreds of Turtlesinger Shows.

Turtle Christmas Tree

This little tree brightens its corner with turtle ornaments! And there are even more turtle Christmas ornaments hanging from our shower curtain rod (a practice we started when our mischievous cats were still kittens and which we liked so much we have continued).

Here’s a tip if you didn’t already know: key chains, bottle openers, and sun-catchers also make great Christmas ornaments!

Once again, many of these ornaments hold very special memories. For a video closeup of these ornaments, SCROLL DOWN…

More Ornaments
in Motion to Music!

Please enjoy our turtle ornaments to the tune of our Turtle Lullabye / Silent Night duet.

It has been many years since we have set up a turtle Christmas tree! Again, we took advantage of more newfound time.

This little tree has also been utilized at different Christmas in July Turtlesinger Shows as people from the audience volunteered to come up and help decorate it.

Most of these ornaments were gifts from others or souvenirs from our turtle travels over the years. We’ll save the shower curtain rod turtle ornaments to show you next Christmas.

We thank you as always for reading, and for sharing our Cape May County Christmas blog with us. Wishing you a Turtle-y Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
