A Shell of a Good Time for
National Mushroom Day: The Whole Picture

In honor of National Mushroom Day, we wanted to focus on the mushroom Bart was about to eat in the cropped version of this photo you saw to get here. But, in so doing, you missed seeing Big Black Bart’s big shell – which as you can see is far bigger than his head.

Looks Like Feta Cheese

Big Black Bart enjoyed a large mushroom on the lawn in July. I think it looks like feta cheese as he swallows it. Bart is still not used to cameras, or it may be he’s distracted by things in which he can see his reflection, which may be why he stops some of the time and stares at the camera.

Speaking of other foods mushrooms can be mistaken for, when we put pieces of mushroom on sticks for children to feed Bart at public events (at least before Covid) and asked the children what Bart was about to eat, they would often say “a marshmallow.” We sure miss being able to show our turtles and interact in person with the public!

Watch Your Fingers

Bart was really hungry the day we fed him these mushrooms, and you can see that he loves all kinds of mushrooms. Bart has a very sharp, serrated beak of a mouth that can easily draw blood. Although he would never bite someone on purpose or in a mean way, he can bite by mistake: another reason we use sticks when letting others feed him. Sometimes he seems to like eating his food off sticks better than any other way!

Did you know turtles can eat mushrooms that are harmful to people? Word has it that the American Indians used to caution settlers not to eat box turtle meat because it could be poisonous from mushrooms the box turtles would eat.

Finally, to see an eastern box turtle eat a mushroom really fast (in speeded up time), explore our August 29th Turtlesinger Blog! We hope you celebrate National Mushroom Day in your own special way. Thanks as always for reading!
