It’s Showtime!

We’re very excited to announce we’ve booked a VIRTUAL Turtlesinger Show starting today on my birthday at the West Deptford Public Library! We found a former show we had taped some time ago (Spike looks so little then)! I chose the picture on the left because the show includes our performance of Little Sea Turtle Song, complete with volunteer kids who act as sea turtles and end up in the sandbox! The show runs on the library website through August 31st. To see the show, go to: https://wdfplchildren.wordpress.com/

To see another one of my favorite turtle pictures, SCROLL DOWN...

Kiss From a Trumpet Flower…

Here’s one of my favorite pictures: remember that song Kiss From a Rose by the singer, Seal?

This picture on the left could be titled Kiss From a Trumpet Flower, as Big Black Bart seems to be kissing it!

Pretty neat trick, since turtles don’t have lips, but more like sharp beaks.

For some recent local turtle video I really love, SCROLL DOWN…

"We live on the salt marsh--What a place to be:
It is the diamondback terrapin turtle territory!"
(lyrics from "Diamondback Terrapin Song"
by Karen Buckley, The Turtlesinger)

Last weekend we got some close-up footage of local diamondback terrapins! Unlike other turtles who can inhabit brackish, salt marsh water from time to time, diamondback terrapins are the only turtles in the world exclusively adapted to live their entire lives in and about the salt marsh in brackish water. Note in the video left how different they can be in appearance: some are white with black spots, some are dark with spots, etc.

Last weekend a terrapin also laid eggs in our yard! To watch some of her nesting process, SCROLL DOWN…

Don't miss the ending of this video!

We were excited to get video footage of a terrapin laying eggs in our yard. We sped up the video until the very end, when we slowed the video way down. Then, she lays an egg you can JUST see if you watch very carefully!

Thanks to the Wetlands Institute for providing us with materials to immediately cover the nest after she left down our turtle ramp, because a crow was ready and waiting to eat them!

Happy end of July in just a few days…and thanks as always for reading!
